The challenge was that most movie theaters did not financially qualify for the amount of financing needed, which was typically $60,000.00 per screen. Further, the major movie studios were forcing the theaters to convert to digital, as they were not going to distribute movies on film any longer after December 2013; in fact, many stopped film distribution prior to that. Thus, the theaters were facing extinction unless they converted to digital. To offset the cost of the conversions, the major studios agreed to reimburse the cost of the new equipment through a very complex formula and structure utilizing an intermediary as their agent. There was more than one intermediary that the theater needed to align itself with, and the agreement between each intermediary and each studio was negotiated separately and differently.

As you might imagine, most lenders ran away from this scenario without the desire and/or ability to understand the complex structure. Upon our introduction to NEC Display, Quail was able to quickly understand the entire structure and provide the necessary funding.
